Personalization has always been in vogue as a marketing ploy to promote everything from monogrammed clothes and jewelry to customized laptops and cell phones with special ring tones. Today, this trend is appearing in the health care industry as a strategy to encourage proactive health management. With Wii Fit and other game consoles that administer fitness training, iPhone apps that track caloric intake, and even PDA-like devices that rate products using genome computing analysis , users have ...Read More

Many of us are familiar with those interactive displays at museums where you press a button and different bulbs light up to show you something like the path an explorer took to discover a new country or an arboreal animal's habitat in the forest canopy. Frankly, I'm never that impressed with those exhibits. I need a lot more "wow" to get me interacting with a display. Which is precisely why I got excited the other day while talking to the folks over at Micro Industries , an Affiliate Member of...Read More

In medical imaging, a picture is worth a thousand words and several gigabytes of data. MRI and CT scans, mass-spectrometry, phenotyping, and genetic studies generate hundreds of terabytes of data that must be processed and stored by powerful supercomputers, like the Intel Xeon-based SGI Altix UV being used to support the efforts of the Institute of Cancer Research in England.   Companies that manufacture medical imaging equipment rely on embedded technology vendors to deliver high-perfor...Read More

While health care insurance and public policy spark heated debate, it’s difficult to dispute the value of medical devices and equipment that can minimize operating costs and improve patient care. The burden on medical device developers is to provide advanced technologies that fulfill the health care industry’s need for fast, secure, convenient solutions certified to strict rules and regulations.   In a market exploding with growth driven by trends such as an aging population, s...Read More

Like many people, I'm an information freak. I especially like a lot of information before I plunk down hard-earned cash for something. The bigger the purchase, the more information I want. I've walked out of many stores or backed out of retail websites because I didn't have enough information to make a purchase. There's also a time element in play here. I'm a busy guy. I have a full-time job, a family, and like to spend as much time as I can outdoors. So I don't have much time to spend on buyin...Read More

We've looked at a digital signage overview, graphics capability, and hardware maintenance and security ideas and trends. Now, we shift gears and take a look at the content presentation software side.   In simple architectural form, digital signage systems are a display powered by a media player (a dedicated computer with multimedia capability) attached to a network. They are often called on to just display information today, but these systems are increasingly becoming more interactive with...Read More

We've looked at an overview of digital signage computing platforms and integrated graphics capability supporting signage displays, and we're ready to take a closer look at the physical characteristics of a system, including maintenance and security. These aspects will help identify what I think are the trends coming into play soon.   Digital signage systems are in public places, by definition - they are meant for information or advertising content. This means physical mounting and security...Read More

In part 1 of this series, we quickly named the elements of a digital signage system. We're ready to take a closer look at the graphics and multimedia capability a system needs.   "Signage" pretty much implies the graphics capability has to be good, because it's all the viewer really sees of a digital signage system, even though there is much more behind the scenes. The focus should be on content displayed crisply and vibrantly with rich media blending capability, but not necessarily at ult...Read More

I'm nearsighted. In fact, I'm so nearsighted that at the ophthalmologist , I can't see the top letter without my eyeglasses. This has always made it hard to shop for eyeglasses. When I put on a pair I'm considering, I have to hold my face so close to the mirror to see what I look like that I really don't get a very good look at how the frame complements (or clashes) with my overall facial features. For this reason, my wife always insists on coming with me to the optometrist. She knows if she ...Read More

Most of us have had our fair share of bad driving experiences and unpleasant road trips akin to Clark Griswold's mishap-filled cross-country trek depicted in the 1983 cult classic "National Lampoon's Vacation." Vicious picnic-ruining dogs and deceased aunts aside, we all know what it feels like to be uncomfortable and bored while stuck in the car for any extended period of time.   Fortunately, embedded systems designers are developing In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) platforms to incorporate ...Read More

Digital signage is showing up in all kinds of public and corporate applications: information signage and billboards, retail displays with advertising and promotions, and self-service kiosks which combine transactions with advertising. Anywhere a consumer can be found trying to gain information or make a transaction is by a broad definition an opportunity for a digital signage application.   In a recent deployment, a digital signage app is now seen prominently at the busiest airport in Asia...Read More

The other day a friend picked me up in a new hybrid SUV for a trip to a favorite hiking spot. Considering that I still drive a car from the last century, I couldn't help but take inventory of all the electronic goodies. The highest coolness factor went to the voice-activated navigation system. You can drive into a city and ask it to "show me Thai restaurants." It will show you on a map all the ones in the vicinity, let you to select one, and then calculate the best route and provide visual and ...Read More

Though it could have earned you some cash a few months ago, that old clunker out back isn't going to do you much good with its lousy gas mileage, sputtering engine, and miscellaneous recalled items that you never bothered to get fixed.   Just as a vehicle needs a quality mechanical design to function properly and keep maintenance costs low, so too does an In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) system require a reliable hardware platform to enable seamless integration and rapid development at minima...Read More
