I'm nearsighted. In fact, I'm so nearsighted that at the ophthalmologist , I can't see the top letter without my eyeglasses. This has always made it hard to shop for eyeglasses. When I put on a pair I'm considering, I have to hold my face so close to the mirror to see what I look like that I really don't get a very good look at how the frame complements (or clashes) with my overall facial features. For this reason, my wife always insists on coming with me to the optometrist. She knows if she ...Read More

I've been fortunate so far in my life and through good health have never spent any significant time personally in a hospital. I have visited hospitalized friends or family members, in some cases in the intensive care unit (ICU). One was my son who was born prematurely and spent 10 days in the neonatal unit. One of the immediate observations anyone has in visiting such patients is the number of confining wires connected to them to alert doctors and staffs to everything from changes in heartbeat ...Read More

Since the advent of online shopping, brick-and-mortar stores have seen a lot less of me and my wallet. The brick-and-mortar stores that I do patronize are those with good online shopping systems. One chain I frequent a lot offers free shipping to online shoppers when you pick up orders at their stores. This is a smart tactic. It gets people like me who make online purchases inside store walls. Once there, I usually buy something else.   When I examine the reasons I shop online, self servic...Read More

Imagine you're a designer of industrial control systems. You're working on a control system for performing automatic temperature and pressure control cycles for advanced composites manufacturing. The system has to allow up to six programmable temperature/pressure ramps with timed dwell periods after each. You’re facing the usual challenge of trying to increase system performance, while reducing costs so your solution can be more competitively priced in today’s market. Someone mentio...Read More

As a roving reporter for Intel® Embedded & Communications Alliance, I recently paid a visit to Advantech, a Premier member of the ecosystem program and an exciting group of people to talk to. Our subject was what role their products for wind power generation are playing in the coming world of 15 billion intelligent connected devices .   Obviously, this is a great field to be in. There's a lot to feel good about in contributing to the wind power industry. Wind power is clean, pl...Read More

I'm Mark Scantlebury, and as a recently assigned roving reporter for the Intel ® Embedded & Communications Alliance ,  I'll be covering one of the most exciting trends in the embedded computing industry: the rapid growth of intelligent connected devices. As you've probably read in recent articles and blogs, the industry is expecting 15 billion connected devices by 2015 . And not just any kind of connected devices. Many of these will be connected intelligent devices communicating ...Read More
