Anonymous viewer analytics (AVA) lets signs see their audience—meaning advertisers can customize their messages and measure the results. What’s more, new features in the future 3rd generation Intel® Core™ processor family can cut signage operators’ costs. Emerson Network Power has all the details in its new Embedded Innovator article .     For more articles like this, subscribe to the Embedded Innovator . Retail is a tough industry – consumer tastes are fickle, margins are often razor-thin, and employee turnover can be high, making it difficult to improve staff expertise and efficiency. Fortunately, intelligent retail system can address all of these problems, helping retailers grow and prosper even in today’s middling economy. In this blog, we will look at three particularly hot technologies: digital signage with viewer analytics , retail systems that combine entry-level prices ...Read More

Low cost cameras and video analytics technology are transforming digital signage from a passive display system into a smart data collection network where owners can track and optimize their return on investment and cost per impression. As I covered in part 1 of this intelligent signage series, the Intel® Audience Impression Metric Suite (Intel® AIM Suite) coupled with the 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processor architecture, provides the video analysis and face detection ...Read More

In the first part of this series I covered techniques and products that you can use to start developing digital signage for promotional and information delivery applications based on the latest Intel® Atom™E6xx architecture . Although these applications are extremely popular, another segment of the digital signage industry has also recently attracted a lot of attention and developer interest, namely In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI). As consumers spend more time in automobiles, trucks...Read More

Over the last 6-12 months, a wave of digital signage players has arrived that combines HD video capabilities with low cost, low power, and small size.  These new players all leverage the Intel® Atom™ platform, but there are important differences among them.  From a chipset-level perspective, you have four main options, each with its own pros and cons:   1. Use the standard Intel® Atom™ N270 or Intel® Atom™ N450 chipset .   The Intel Atom N270...Read More

The digital signage market is constantly pushing for solutions with lower cost.  Today the focus of cost-reduction efforts focuses heavily on up-front hardware costs.  While up-front costs are certainly important, they represent only a portion of a system’s total cost of ownership (TCO).  To minimize TCO, signage developers and end customers alike must consider a system’s reliability, longevity, and manageability.  In this blog we’ll explain how these facto...Read More

Many of us are familiar with those interactive displays at museums where you press a button and different bulbs light up to show you something like the path an explorer took to discover a new country or an arboreal animal's habitat in the forest canopy. Frankly, I'm never that impressed with those exhibits. I need a lot more "wow" to get me interacting with a display. Which is precisely why I got excited the other day while talking to the folks over at Micro Industries , an Affiliate Member of...Read More

Like many people, I'm an information freak. I especially like a lot of information before I plunk down hard-earned cash for something. The bigger the purchase, the more information I want. I've walked out of many stores or backed out of retail websites because I didn't have enough information to make a purchase. There's also a time element in play here. I'm a busy guy. I have a full-time job, a family, and like to spend as much time as I can outdoors. So I don't have much time to spend on buyin...Read More

Not too long ago I wrote about exciting new developments in intelligent kiosks and what they could mean for brick-and-mortar stores trying to compete with online businesses. It turns out that was only half the story. The other half concerns all the advancements being made in intelligent digital signage and price-checking systems. These are rapidly joining the 15 billion intelligent, connected devices (the Embedded Internet) the IDC predicts to be online by the year 2015.[1] ...Read More
