At this years ESC I will be teaching a class on the hardware being used to launch Mirosoft's Windows Embedded Standard 7. The full list of classes can be found at http://bit.ly/dr0TTZ . Of course I can highly recommend that you stop by my Atom class Mon 4pm.  Its included as part of the All-Access pass, but 4-day and ESC 3-day pass holders can purchase this hardware kit for $299.   Note to Seed Board users . The BYOES kit and the AIMB-212N Seed board use the same embed...Read More

Installing an operating system on an embedded evaluation board can be a bit of a problem if you don't have an optical drive. Other reasons to read further may be ... o   You are playing around with boot options and don't want to use up your limited stock of CDR's o   You only have a CD-ROM drive, and your distribution of choice comes on a DVD sized ISO. o   You really are an embedded developer, and you are constantly rebuilding the OS, and you don't have the boot o...Read More

Click here to choose from 3 different webinars described below:      The Moblin SDK Moblin provides the complete platform OS layer and is highly optimized for the latest Intel® Atom™ processor technology. The application development SDK will be presented with key open source components. Intel launched the first Atom 45nm processor in April 2008 and also delivered its first complete tool suite for MID (mobile Internet device) system and application software development....Read More

Real Embedded Engineers Don't Do Windows As an embedded developer you may be asking, " What has graphics to do with embedded processing?". When my family and friends ask me about my work, I still throw out buzzwords like embedded procesors, but my definition of embedded has changed in the past few years. I used to define embedded as a "hidden" processor that provides the smarts in a device, but the hidden piece is changing. Traditional embedded developers are not accustomed to working with grap...Read More

Most people associate virtualization with IT data center environments, such as server farm consolidation, but virtualization can also play an important role in embedded and communications applications, particularly as they migrate to multi-core processors. Benefits include system cost reduction, increased performance and functionality, and increased security and reliability.   In the computing space, virtualization is defined as an environment in which multiple Operating Systems (OS) run o...Read More

The software performance gain you can expect migrating from single- to multi-core depends on a several factors, not the least of which is the architecture and very nature of the application. A logical starting point would be to scale the single-core performance linearly by the number of cores. But there may be some system overhead that experience shows can consume 10-20\% capacity - so a reasonable expectation for many applications is slightly sub-linear, for example 3.2x to 3.8x on a four-core...Read More

Embedded applications such as imaging, network intrusion detection, and call processing are good examples of applications that benefit from multi-core. Performance is increased because multiple threads running on multiple cores can process many requests simultaneously. This article provides a high-level summary of optimizing a serial designed application for multi-core. The exercise uses the open-source AMIDE (A Medical Imaging Data Examiner) application as the example. Using rendering techni...Read More

Compared with single-core, multi-core parallelism enables processing a constant volume of data in less time (quicker turnaround), more data within a constant time (increased throughput), or a combination of both. Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) is a computer system with multiple CPUs that share the same Operating System (OS) and main memory. SMP OSs are well suited for multi-core due to their inherent parallel processing capabilities. SMP treats the multi-core hardware as a shared resource with...Read More
