The Intel® Platform for Communications Infrastructure has arrived.

 

I’m very pleased to announce that the Intel platform for communications infrastructure has officially arrived! Many of you are surely familiar with this new platform, codenamed “Crystal Forest,” which was announced in February. Since then we’ve achieved more than 50 design wins, and 10 companies have announced their support including 6Wind, Advantech, ADLINK, Axiomtek, NEXCOM, Emerson, WIN Enterprises, SiSoft, Lanner, and ADI Engineering. The Intel communications platform ecosystem has hardware boards, development software and communications solutions   commercially available to all vendors.

What’s really exciting about the new infrastructure is that now systems architects can design the majority of network elements on a single architecture – one codebase, one set of development tools and a massive ecosystem. Instead of using many different processor architectures which are complex to integrate into a working system, now system developers can develop a common, multi-workload platform.

 

The platform for communications infrastructure was created to address one of the greatest technological challenges of our time – building out the global communications infrastructure to handle the exponential growth in IP traffic volumes.  And today’s IP traffic is no longer just email, voice, FTP and web clicks, it includes streaming video, tweets, picture uploads – all enabled by 4G wireless networks.  Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs) are under pressure like never before to provide faster, more efficient equipment capable of handling unprecedented traffic volume. Equally, network service providers must utilize this equipment effectively in their networks to deliver high quality and value-added services at competitive prices.

At the foundation of this technology breakthrough is a workload consolidation strategy that enables a more scalable, flexible, power-efficient, and cost-effective infrastructure. This complements the industry trend we see today of exploring and utilizing a software-based approach to network and telecommunications infrastructure.

 

The platform is based on the Intel microarchitecture codenamed Sandy Bridge and includes Intel® QuickAssist Technology. It has the ability to deliver three different workloads, such as application, data plane and control plane, on a single architecture. The variety of platform components offered will provide truly incredible scalability, from a low-end router to a high-end one delivering up to 160 million packets per second Layer 3 packet forwarding performance!

 

And oh by the way, Intel is not the only company addressing the needs for communications platform scalability.  Today, Wind River Systems is also announcing the Intelligent Network Platform – “a software platform for the development of sophisticated network equipment that can accelerate and secure the flood of traffic for current and future networks."   The Wind River Intelligent Network Platform delivers the Linux operating system , software development tools and software engines that provide fast packet acceleration and content inspection.  Combined with the Intel communications platform, TEMs can develop communications systems on Intel Architecture like never before.

 

We’re excited to see how TEMs embrace the architecture to take advantage of more manufacturing options and streamline the development effort and in-field support, all leading to reduced costs. In tandem, we see service providers dynamically reallocating workloads, conserving energy, deploying new services with much greater efficiency, and decreasing the number of physical assets required in their networks through virtualization.
