MULTI-CORE NETWORKING FOR THE NEW DATA PLANE
Multi-core technology and other advances have enabled network equipment to support more complex processing than ever before without having to resort to custom ASICs that are difficult to use and difficult to scale. No longer limited to light touch operations, network applications now include higher layer processing, advanced security, and workloads typically performed by end systems, such as the processing of packet contents. This whitepaper discusses a use case where embedded software, optimized for Intel architecture (IA) processors, is being used to create high-performance data plane applications. The paper offers a look into Wind River’s intelligent network solutions which utilizes advances in Linux and other software elements to accelerate a variety of data plane networking applications, including routing, network security, wireless infrastructure, and others.
