Thanks for quick response. It has certainly helped my understanding some. Am I correct in thinking that the eepromARMtool is one way of programming the NVM when in place? If so how can I get hold of this tool?

The Intel I210, I211, and X550 EEPROM Access Tool (EAT) document # 572162 is the requested tool.
It is accessible when you are logged into your Resource & Design Center (RDC) privileged account. It can be requested by filling out the RDC Account Support form.
