We are going to redesign an embedded product that was based on the 80C186 and its peripherals (bus controller, PICs). We desire to minimize risk in the software by staying with either the same processor (still available but expensive in the mil-temp range that we require), or by migrating to something that would be "code comatible". At this time, the exact rules for what would be compatible are unresolved.
Question: are there code-compatble or near-compatible upgrade paths from this processor?
Forgive my ignorance; we use mostly Freescale embedded!
